The insignia worn by the Marine on the left wearing Army olive drab is comprised of an unadorned star within a circle, which may have been improvised form an early variation of the 79th Infantry Division’s insignia. I have some black metal ones for the BDU's without collar insignia. Were subdued metal collar rank insignia worn in the period 1982-1990 ? Thanks in advance, Cheers, Johan Heitzer The Netherlands The insignia of the division was a Santa Fe Cross within a circle. When the men went overseas, this sign was stenciled on trunks and baggage. When later on in France, it became a shoulder insignia, curiously enough the breaks in the circle necessary for the stencil became permanent in the cloth insignia, although obviously incorrect. The result is a comprehensive reference that provides detailed pictures of desert uniforms, patches, and insignia worn by the US Armed Forces in combat from Desert Storm, through Somalia and in the more recent hard fought campaigns of Iraq and Afghanistan. We have covered the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and even the Coast Guard.
